Learn MoreCounting the Chimneys on a Torrance Property
Torrance began as a planned city, and its postwar tracts dominate today, usually one brick flue per house, reinforced but decades old. About half of its homes are detached. In Old Torrance a home may have a very different and much older stack, so we write them up differently. Sea breezes keep it moderate west of Hawthorne Boulevard, and Santa Anas are occasional. The offshore Palos Verdes Fault and Newport-Inglewood to the northeast frame the city, so old brick gets checked for shaking even in mild weather.
What a Typical Lot Has
A postwar house with one reinforced brick flue, or a midcentury hillside home where the stack runs longer on a slope.
What We Watch on Each Flue
Shaking from faults on either side, sea-breeze damp west of Hawthorne Boulevard, and long stacks on hillside lots.
Where It Sits on Our Route
Torrance is a planned South Bay city with Irving Gill's early buildings.
Shared Visit Days
Torrance visits often share a day with Gardena, Lawndale, Redondo Beach.
Before We Book
How many fireplaces does your Torrance house have?
Count the ones inside, the ones outside and any stove in a guest house or workshop. That number sets the length of the visit, and each one gets its own note afterward.
