Learn MoreCounting the Chimneys on an Avalon Property
Half the homes on the island's only city went up before 1950, many in close quarters with shared walls or tight roofs. Avalon sits about 57 miles from Encino across open water, so listing every flue on one trip matters more here. Salt in the wind goes after galvanized parts first: caps, chase covers, flashing. Fog in May and June keeps that metal damp. The Island Fire of 2007 is why a sound spark screen is not optional in this canyon.
What a Typical Lot Has
A small cottage or older hillside house with an aged flue, or a condo unit in a building of several.
What We Watch on Each Flue
Rusting galvanized parts in salt air, damp chase covers, and screens that have to stop embers on a brushy island.
Where It Sits on Our Route
Avalon is the only incorporated city on Santa Catalina Island, in a tight canyon.
Shared Visit Days
Avalon visits often share a day with Pebbly Beach, Long Beach, Hamilton Cove.
Before We Book
How many fireplaces does your Avalon house have?
Count the ones inside, the ones outside and any stove in a guest house or workshop. That number sets the length of the visit, and each one gets its own note afterward.
