Wood Stove Repair in Studio City: Written Report, Licensed Technicians

The call came from a 1960s ranch-style home tucked into the Coldwater Canyon hillside. The homeowner told us she hadn't used her wood stove since the previous winter, but during a warm October afternoon with Santa Ana winds pushing through the canyon, she caught a faint creosote smell drifting into her living room. She assumed the wind was pulling air down through the flue. What actually worried her was the timing: fire season was peaking along the Mulholland Drive corridor, and CAL FIRE had just issued red flag warnings for the surrounding brush zones. When she walked us through the setup, a few things stood out. The door didn't latch flush anymore. She could feel warm air leaking around the glass panel even when the stove was cold, which meant the gasket seal had dried out and compressed. The firebrick lining on the left side panel had a vertical crack running about four inches. And the baffle plate, the steel deflector above the firebox that routes exhaust gases toward the flue, was warped and sagging. For a home less than 200 yards from heavy chaparral, with no defensible space buffer on the uphill side, every one of those issues added risk. She needed more than a cleaning. Our CSIA-certified technician started with a Level 2 inspection per NFPA 211, which includes a camera scan of the flue connector and chimney interior. The flue itself was intact, no earthquake micro-cracking in the liner, but 2nd-degree creosote had built up along the first three feet of the connector pipe. Inside the stove, we confirmed the baffle plate had lost its factory position and was directing combustion gases unevenly, which explained the smell. We pulled the old baffle, replaced it with a manufacturer-spec steel plate, and relined both side panels with new firebrick cut to the original dimensions. The door gasket was swapped with a high-density fiberglass rope rated to 1,000°F. Total time on site: about three hours.

We also cleaned the air wash system, the channel that feeds preheated air across the inside of the glass to keep it clear during burns. In Studio City's estate homes along the Mulholland Drive corridor and toward the Hidden Hills border, wood stoves are often secondary heat sources used a dozen or so times a year. That infrequent use lets gaskets degrade and firebrick crack without anyone noticing. A stove that sits dormant for eight months and then fires up during a red flag event is a genuine hazard.
